The quiet grounds of The St. Iakovos Retreat Center quickly filled with joy as our campers arrived this evening! Counselors eagerly awaited to meet those in their cabins and friendships have already blossomed.
After our campers were settled in, we all headed down to dinner where we were treated with chicken, pasta, broccoli and our yummy salad bar. Deacon Chris explained our camp rules and what to expect this week and then we met all our spirited counselors and learned what band/singer is their favorite!
Spirit points are up for grabs! Our spirit squad, Diakonissa Nicole and Maria, explained how we show that we have the Holy Spirit within, by displaying unity, love, respect and kindess during the week. Each cabin can earn spirit coins during the day and spirit sticks will be given out each night.
Camp Store will be open tomorrow at free time, and we got a preview of all the cool Fanari swag and snacks that will be available to buy!
Finally, we went through a rotation of each of our daily activities: Orthodox Life, Bible Study, Theater, and “Flex”, where we will rotate with Greek Culture, Chanting, Arts & Crafts and Athletics each day. Afterwards, we enjoyed the ultimate “Orthodox Sunday Sundae Bar”, with an ice cream social and all the delicious toppings we could pile in our bowls. What a fun 1st night at Fanari Camp!
As our night came to an end, we gathered in the Main Lodge for our chapel service, led by Fr. Ted Poteres from SS. Constantine & Helen, Merriville IN. Campers then went back to their cabins to do their first devotionals with their counselors and get ready for lights out.
Session 2 of Fanari Camp is off to a great start! We look forward to all the memories we’ll make this week together. See you tomorrow for the beginning of what we know will be another blessed week of camp!
