Thursday 6/23: Picnic Day

We had a lot in store for Day 4 of camp and this is only the beginning of it! There was a light drizzle of rain in the morning, but nothing stopped us from enjoying our time together and filling our day with all of God’s blessings.

After morning chapel and breakfast, we started off our day with 3 rotations: Sara, Pres. Anna & Fr. Kosmas guided our campers on a Scavenger Hunt around the grounds of the retreat center! So much fun taking selfies, figuring out the clues and using Bible verses to help them. Fr. Panagiotis & Fr. Anastasios led a session on the the vestments that a priest wears and the meaning behind each one. Alex & Fr. Michael explained the Hierarchy and the Great & Holy Council that is currently taking place in Crete. Our guest, Fr. Maximos Nnachette from Nigeria, talked about life there and the differences between our two worlds. It was a wonderful morning filled with so many new and exciting things that we are learning and experiencing at Fanari Camp!

Then it was picnic time!!! Dn. Chris, Arun and Fr. Chris Mihalopoulos were busy cooking our souvlakia and warming up some pita bread on the grill. We were overjoyed to have a visit from His Eminence Metropolitan Iakovos, and he blessed the campers, staff and our delicious food so that the picnic could begin! A big THANK YOU to the Chiganos family for donating some delicious Zogalo Rice Pudding for our picnic. Campers also had fun playing soccer, volleyball and their new favorite, Octoball. Farmer Joe brought out the tractor and everyone enjoyed Maria’s crazy wagon ride to visit the animals at the barn. We always find something fun to do at Fanari Camp!

Before he left, His Eminence explained why we use prayer ropes and told us how happy he was to see us all gathered together at Fanari Camp on the beautiful grounds of the St. Iakovos Retreat Center. He also gave each of us a prayer book and prayer rope or “komboskini” as a gift.

Glory be to God for watching over us all day! We just finished with evening chapel, lead by Fr. Panagiotis, ate dinner, took our group picture and are now getting ready for our dance. Pictures will be posted tonight! We can’t wait to see which super heroes show up at the Fanari Dance! Stay tuned…
